QR Code-Accessed Guidelines and Trainee Confidence in TIVA

Abstract

Total Intravenous Anaesthesia (TIVA) uses only intravenous agents and offers an alternative to inhalational anaesthesia. A recent consensus statement suggests that TIVA may be beneficial in paediatric anaesthesia, with associated reductions in postoperative nausea and vomiting, potential environmental advantages over volatile agents, and favourable effects on airway and haemodynamic control. However, the same consensus, experts did not agree on whether lack of familiarity or training remains a significant barrier. The 5th National Audit Project (NAP5) on accidental awareness during general anaesthesia found insufficient education and training were common contributory factors. We sought to evaluate our trainees’ experience and confidence with TIVA in our department.
