Nucleic Commandments

Poem by B. Artinian

When cells betray their lord, the end is at hand
Of their kingdom – their multicellular land!
Nucleic commandments they must strictly obey,
So that not a single cell may sin or go astray, .
And apoptosis they must so highly venerate,
That suicide may swiftly end a degenerate.
Yet should some degenerates become immortal
And attempt to travel ‘intercontinental’,
Lymphocytes duly alerted at myriad posts
Become killers to turn the immortals into ghosts!
But despite the contingency schemes the body boasts,
Some immortal cells still manage to slay their hosts.
